Understanding the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

What the qualification covers

TAE40122 requires 12 units of competency — 6 core units covering the fundamentals of designing, delivering and assessing nationally recognised training, and 6 elective units that can vary by provider. At CBD College the electives include practical, widely-used skills like facilitating online learning, assessing competence online, workplace instruction, presentations, LLN support, and CPR (HLTAID009).

How the course actually runs

Two short online learning modules come first — usually a few hours each — completed before Day 1. Then it's 10 consecutive business days of live training: Day 1 runs 8:30am–5pm, Days 2–10 run 9am–5pm. You start working on your written assessments during those days with a trainer on hand, then finish them afterwards in your own time — there's no minimum timeframe, so students with strong computer skills or VET experience often finish well ahead of the 9-month Part 1 / 3-month Part 2 windows.

Classroom or Zoom — same qualification either way

• Classroom: 7 days in the physical classroom (Sydney or Melbourne) + 3 days on Zoom, so you also get experience training and assessing in a virtual environment
• Zoom: all 10 days delivered live via video conference, available Australia-wide
• Both options: no vocational placement, no video-recorded assessments — practicals are completed in class

What's different about how CBD College teaches it

Rather than one assessment per unit, the course uses 8 integrated assessments that cover all 12 units without repeating overlapping material. There's also a free, optional 2-day TAE Access Course for enrolled students before Day 1 — useful if you haven't studied for a while or want a confidence boost on the course language and computer skills before the intensive block starts.
