How to become a barista in Australia

You don't need a formal qualification to become a barista in Australia — but hands-on training and experience make you much more employable. The usual path is: learn the core skills (espresso extraction, milk steaming and latte art), practise on a real machine, complete a barista course to show employers you can do the job and start applying for café roles. If you'll also serve alcohol in a licensed venue, you'll need an RSA.
Do you need a qualification?
No — there's no legal requirement to be qualified to work as a barista. But cafés move fast, and owners want someone who can already pull a good shot and steam milk under pressure. A short, practical course gets you there far quicker than learning on the job.
