Do I need a first aid certificate for work?

Many Australian workplaces require at least one trained first aider, and some roles require every staff member to hold first aid or CPR. Requirements come from Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws and a risk assessment of your workplace, with guidance from Safe Work Australia. Childcare, education, healthcare, fitness and high-risk industries commonly require it.
Where the requirement comes from
Under WHS law, employers must ensure adequate first aid is available. Safe Work Australia's First Aid Code of Practice helps employers decide how many first aiders are needed and what training they should hold, based on the size and risk of the workplace.
Roles that commonly require it
- Education and childcare (often Childcare First Aid, HLTAID012)
- Healthcare, aged care and disability support
- Fitness, sport and recreation
- Construction and other high-risk industries
- Designated workplace first aiders in any office
