CBD College — RTO 91399

Cert IV TAE (TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment)

TAE40122 is the nationally recognised qualification for anyone who wants to become a trainer and assessor in Australia's vocational education and training (VET) sector — whether that's at an RTO, TAFE, or delivering training in your own workplace. It's delivered by CBD College (RTO 91399), regulated by ASQA, under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

This course suits existing workplace trainers and assessors, trainers/assessors already working in RTOs, people who want to move into an RTO trainer or assessor role, and anyone wanting to learn about adult education or work in RTO compliance/administration. No previous training or teaching experience is required — you just need vocational competency in the subject area you want to train and assess in.

About this qualification

TAE40122 replaces the superseded TAE40116 and is the current standard qualification required to deliver nationally recognised training or assessment at an RTO.

CBD College Pty Ltd (RTO 91399) is 100% Australian owned and has been a registered training organisation since 2001.

After completing TAE40122, graduates may choose to continue their studies with TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training as a further pathway.

The qualification is made up of 12 units of competency — 6 core and 6 elective:

6 core units

  • TAEDES411 — Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs
  • TAEDES412 — Design and develop plans for vocational training
  • TAEDEL411 — Facilitate vocational training
  • TAEASS412 — Assess competence
  • TAEASS413 — Participate in assessment validation
  • TAEPDD401 — Work effectively in the VET sector

6 elective units

  • TAEDEL311 — Provide work skill instruction
  • TAEDEL405 — Plan, organise and facilitate online learning
  • TAEASS404 — Assess competence in an online environment
  • TAELLN421 — Integrate core skills support into training and assessment
  • BSBCMM411 — Make presentations
  • HLTAID009 — Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

CBD College's trainers are experienced, qualified Trainers and Assessors with backgrounds across TAFE, RTOs and industry. After completing the course you can pursue roles as a trainer or assessor in an RTO, TAFE, or workplace training — CBD College doesn't provide job placement assistance, but the skills gained are highly sought after in the VET sector. There's no vocational placement or practical placement requirement at any point in the course.

How CBD College compares: CBD College's TAE course is a 10-day intensive, face-to-face program (classroom or live via Zoom) with integrated, scenario-based assessments, no vocational placement, and unlimited free help sessions. This is different to many TAFE and online-only providers, which often run over 6–12+ months part-time, use a unit-by-unit assessment approach (more repetitive), and may require video presentations or vocational placement.

Entry requirements & eligibility

  • You must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in the industry or subject area you intend to train and assess in — this means broad industry knowledge and experience, which could include holding a relevant qualification or significant workplace experience.
  • No prior experience in training, teaching or assessing is required. If you do have prior experience in the VET sector, it won't change the entry requirements, but it can reduce the time it takes you to complete your assessments.
  • On Day 1 of class, you'll need to bring evidence of your vocational competency — this could be a resume, a qualification certificate, or other evidence of industry experience.
  • All students need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) before a nationally recognised certificate can be issued. It's free to create at usi.gov.au.
  • If you already have significant relevant experience, you may be able to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an alternative pathway to the standard delivered course. RPL is assessed and priced differently to the standard course — get in touch to discuss whether it's a good fit for your situation.
  • Credit transfer: if you've already achieved one or more of the 12 units elsewhere, you may be eligible for credit transfer — but only if you hold the exact current unit code (an earlier/predecessor version of the same unit won't be accepted). Credit transfer must be applied for prior to enrolment, and while it may reduce the time it takes you to finish, it does not reduce the $3,499 course fee, even where credit is granted.
  • International students: CBD College is not a CRICOS-registered provider, so international students on a visa that requires study at a CRICOS-registered institution cannot enrol in TAE40122.

Literacy, language and numeracy

You'll need effective language, literacy and interpersonal skills to succeed in this course, including the ability to:

  • read, research and interpret documents and websites
  • develop and document training and assessment materials (learning programs, etc.)
  • present information clearly to others
  • use standard computer technology and software
  • write and prepare training and assessment records

If you have a disability, or specific learning, language, literacy, numeracy or digital-skills needs, please email info@cbdcollege.edu.au before booking so CBD College can discuss reasonable adjustments with you.

TAE Access Course

If you have identified gaps in language, literacy, numeracy or digital skills, or you simply haven't studied in a while, CBD College offers a complimentary, optional 2-day TAE Access Course workshop before Day 1. It introduces key aspects of the full TAE40122 program in advance, so you can start the main course feeling more confident and prepared. It's optional — not a prerequisite — and is offered at no extra cost.

Course structure & duration

It's important to separate two different timeframes for this course:

  • Face-to-face component: 10 consecutive business days. This is the in-person (or live Zoom) training block where you're introduced to course content and complete your practical assessments. Written assessments are started in class and then completed in your own time afterwards.
  • Total enrolment window: 12 months from your first day of class. You can submit your assessments as soon as they're done — many students finish well before the 12-month mark.

Class hours (AET):

  • Day 1: 8:30am–5pm, starting with a CPR class from 8:30am–10am (HLTAID009 is one of the bundled elective units), followed by the rest of the Day 1 program.
  • All other days: 9am–5pm.

This is confirmed by the TAE40122 Brochure v13 (July 2026) and resolves an earlier discrepancy between Help Centre articles and the course page over Day 1's start time.

Other things to know about how the course runs:

  • Before Day 1, two online learning modules must be completed via the Student Portal: (1) an "Introduction to TAE40122" module, and (2) a CPR online learning module (around 2 hours, multiple choice) — since Day 1 starts with the CPR class, this module prepares you for it.
  • The face-to-face component can't be split part-time, but if needed you can split your 10 days across two different cohorts (e.g. 5 days with one group, 5 with another).
  • If you miss a class day, you'll arrange to attend that day with a later cohort at a time that suits you and CBD College's schedule.
  • Changes to your class time or location can be arranged, but must be requested more than 7 days before your course start date.
  • Class sizes are kept small: a maximum of 16 students for classroom courses and 12 for Zoom courses.
  • Group activities are part of the face-to-face component — you'll work with other students in your cohort on some assessment tasks.
  • What to bring: photo ID, pen and paper, headphones (to connect to your laptop for video/audio files), plus (on Day 1) your evidence of vocational competency. Dress comfortably — there's no formal dress code.

Delivery modes

You can complete TAE40122 in one of two ways:

  • Classroom course — 7 days in a physical classroom (Sydney CBD or Melbourne CBD) plus 3 days via Zoom.
  • Zoom course — all 10 days live via Zoom, available Australia-wide, so you don't need to live near a CBD College campus.

Both formats are live and face-to-face with a real trainer — the only difference is location. Zoom classes run in the same way as classroom classes: your trainer is front and centre each day, facilitating content and practical assessments in a live virtual classroom. If you've never used Zoom before, it's straightforward, and trainers make sure everyone is comfortable with it before the course gets underway.

The last 3 days of the classroom course are run via Zoom deliberately — this is a considered part of the course design, not a scheduling compromise. Two of the elective units, TAEDEL405 (Plan, organise and facilitate online learning) and TAEASS404 (Assess competence in an online environment), are specifically about online training and assessment. Running Days 8–10 on Zoom lets you first experience online delivery as a learner, then practise conducting it yourself with your cohort in small Zoom groups — direct, hands-on experience with a skill that's essential in the modern VET sector.

Locations:

  • Sydney: Level 5, 8 Quay Street, Haymarket, NSW 2000
  • Melbourne: Level 3, 55 Swanston Street, Melbourne, VIC 3000
  • Zoom: available Australia-wide

Fees & payment options

The course fee is $3,499. The course fee includes all training materials and resources, your assessments and certification, training by CBD College's TAE trainers for the face-to-face component, and access to ongoing support (including Help Sessions — see below) for the duration of your enrolment.

Payment options:

  • Credit card online, via Commonwealth Bank.
  • By phone, on 1300 616 218.
  • In person at the Sydney office — Level 5, 8 Quay Street, Haymarket, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm. Cash, EFTPOS or credit card are all accepted in person.
  • A 50% deposit on enrolment with the balance due the week before your class starts, if that helps with budgeting. Call 1300 616 218 to arrange this.
  • Two easy payments: a $1,500 deposit by card now, then the remaining $1,999 set up through Afterpay or Klarna straight after the deposit — interest-free instalments from there.

Refunds and cancellations: If you cancel after booking but before the course starts, a refund of the course fee less $1,499 is available — but only if you cancel more than 7 days before your course start date. Cancelling within 7 days of the start date is not eligible for any refund, and once you've started the program, no refund is available except in exceptional circumstances (assessed case by case, and if approved, still less the $1,499). If you move your booking to a later date, you permanently lose refund eligibility, even if the new date is more than 7 days away. See the Policies page for the full policy.

Computer & equipment requirements

You'll need an internet-enabled laptop or desktop computer with Microsoft Office installed — this is essential. Minimum versions are Office 2007 or later for PC, and Office 2010 or later for Mac. For the Zoom components of the course, you'll also need a stable internet connection plus a working camera and microphone.

All written assessments are completed in Microsoft Word, so competency in Word specifically is essential — if you need it, seek some tuition in Word before the course starts. Overall, moderate computer skills are needed to complete the course comfortably. If your computer skills are on the lower side, the free, optional TAE Access Course (see Entry requirements & eligibility, above) is a good way to build confidence before Day 1.

Assessments

Assessment in the TAE course is practical and scenario-based, and it's integrated into the course as you go rather than saved up for the end. In total there are 8 integrated assessments, made up of:

  • Delivery of training sessions — to an individual and to groups of learners, with some preparation time given in class.
  • Written questioning.
  • Completion of templates.
  • Self-reflection tasks.

Other things to know:

  • What's assessed: practical tasks, role plays, and written assessment tasks — there are no formal exams.
  • How it's structured: all practical assessments (including role plays) are completed during the 10 face-to-face days. Written assessments are introduced and started in class, then completed at your own pace once the face-to-face component has finished.
  • Group work: some assessment activities are done in groups with the other students in your cohort, during the face-to-face component.
  • After the 10 days: you'll have one additional online learning module plus the eight written assessments to complete.
  • Workplace-related assessment: there's no requirement to complete assessment tasks in an actual workplace — all assessments are scenario-based. You're welcome to optionally draw on your own workplace or experience if it helps, but it's never required.
  • Submission: written assessments are submitted by email, as part of Task A or Task B (see below).
  • Feedback: trainers provide ongoing feedback throughout the course, both verbally during class and in writing on your submitted assessments.

Assessment structure: Task A and Task B

Your assessment is completed in two stages — Assessment Task A and Assessment Task B. You work through Task A first, and once you've been deemed satisfactory in it, you're able to submit Task B.

Assessment Task A (Assessments 1–6) puts your training and assessment skills into practice through six assessments that build on each other, taking you through planning, delivering and assessing training with both individuals and groups:

  1. Plan Training — plan vocational training and draft your training plan and session plans.
  2. Train an Individual — prepare, deliver and review two one-on-one training sessions.
  3. Validation and Assessment — validate an assessment tool, plan assessment, assess a candidate's competence, and check your judgement against the rules of evidence.
  4. Train a Group — prepare, deliver and review training sessions with a group of learners.
  5. Validation and Assessment — validate an assessment tool, plan assessment including support for candidates with particular needs, and assess competence.
  6. Essential Knowledge — demonstrate the underpinning knowledge every trainer and assessor needs.

Task A is due no later than 9 months from the first day of your face-to-face component, though you can submit earlier once it's complete. All six assessments are submitted together as one file.

Assessment Task B (Assessments 7–8) is issued once you've submitted Task A, and covers the professional and workplace side of being a trainer and assessor:

  1. Communicate Workplace Information — plan vocational training, develop a training plan and session plans, plan and conduct a recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment, and validate an assessment tool and assessment judgements.
  2. Operate Effectively in the VET Sector — complete a trainer and assessor matrix with a professional development plan, and demonstrate the essential knowledge trainers need to work effectively in the sector.

Task B is due within 3 months of being deemed satisfactory in Task A, and is submitted as one file to the same assessor who marked your Task A — you can submit any time once both assessments are complete. This aligns with the 9-month/3-month Part 1/Part 2 windows described under "What if I don't complete on time," below.

Marking and feedback: practical components of each assessment are assessed during the face-to-face course itself (the 10 consecutive days). Answers are written in full sentences, and some questions specify a required length — a paragraph means four or more sentences. Your work is marked by a qualified assessor, usually within 15 business days, against each part of the assessment. If any part needs more work, you'll be told exactly what evidence is still needed and given 4 weeks to resubmit. You gain your qualification once every assessment task has been completed and deemed satisfactory.

Support during the course

CBD College runs Help Sessions (also referred to as "Help Days" in some older material) via Zoom — 30-minute, one-on-one sessions with a TAE trainer, available on a weekly basis to all TAE students for the full 12 months of your enrolment. This is the main channel for ongoing support once your face-to-face days are finished — whether you need help understanding content, revising, or working through an assessment, Help Sessions are the place to ask. You can also contact your trainer directly.

If you'd like extra preparation before Day 1, see the free, optional TAE Access Course under Entry requirements & eligibility, above.

CPR unit elective

HLTAID009 (Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is included as one of the six elective units in the TAE40122 qualification. It's included for two reasons: CBD College considers CPR an essential skill for trainers to have, and the CPR unit doubles as a practical, hands-on example of the training and assessment process itself. Day 1 of class starts with the CPR component, after which you're introduced to the structure of the rest of the TAE course.

Certificates

Once you've completed all your assessments, you'll be issued a nationally recognised Certificate (TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment) and a Record of Transcript, available through your Student Portal. Your Certificate and Record of Transcript will be available in your Student Portal within 2 business days of receiving your course completion email. You'll need a USI before your certificate can be issued.

Can I defer my enrolment?

Yes — deferrals may be possible depending on your circumstances. Contact CBD College to discuss available options.

What if I don't complete on time (assessment extensions)

Separately from deferring your enrolment altogether, there are set timeframes for submitting your written assessments after the face-to-face component ends: 9 months to submit Part 1, and a further 3 months to submit Part 2. If you're unable to submit within these timeframes, you'll need to re-enrol in the course, at a cost of $399.
