First Aid, CPR & Childcare First Aid

What these courses are, and who needs them

CBD College delivers three nationally recognised first aid qualifications, all face-to-face and all completed with a same-day certificate:

  • HLTAID009 – Provide CPR (from $45, 1.5 hours) — CPR for adults, children and infants, including how to operate an AED (defibrillator). This is the CPR unit on its own.
  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (from $95, 3 hours, includes CPR) — the complete workplace first aid certificate. It includes the CPR unit and is the certificate most Australian workplaces ask you to hold.
  • HLTAID012 – Childcare First Aid (from $115, 3.5 hours, includes CPR & First Aid) — for educators, childcare workers and OOSH/out-of-school-hours staff. It covers everything in Provide First Aid plus first aid content specific to caring for children, and includes CPR.

If you're not sure which one you need: CPR on its own is for people who only need to renew or hold that single skill; Provide First Aid is the standard, complete certificate most employers require; Childcare First Aid is for anyone working directly with children in an education or care setting.

Note on an older unit code: if your employer has told you that you need "HLTAID003 Provide First Aid," that unit has been superseded — HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the current, equivalent certificate and satisfies the same workplace requirement.

Entry requirements & what to bring

There are no formal entry requirements for any of these courses. You do need to be able to physically participate in the practical components (see the CPR requirement below).

Age: the minimum age is 14, unless the student is accompanied by an adult — the accompanying adult must also pay full price to attend.

What to bring:

  • Photo ID
  • Writing materials, if you'd like to take notes
  • Comfortable clothing — you'll be on the floor at times performing simulated first aid and CPR

Arrive on time. Classes start promptly and late entry isn't permitted if you're more than 15 minutes late — you'll need to rebook into another class.

Course structure & duration

  • Provide CPR (HLTAID009): 1.5 hours.
  • Provide First Aid (HLTAID011): 3 hours, includes the CPR unit.
  • Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012): 3.5 hours, includes CPR and First Aid.

There's a short online pre-study module to complete before your in-person session — you'll receive the link in your enrolment confirmation email (find it in your Student Portal). The in-person session itself is fully practical: there are no written exams. You're assessed through practical tasks and scenario-based role plays.

CPR requirement (kneeling on the floor): for all three courses, you need to demonstrate a continuous 2-minute period of CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor (the same applies to the child manikin for HLTAID012). CPR on an infant manikin is performed for 2 minutes on a firm surface. If you're not able to get on your knees to perform CPR, current government regulations mean we can't issue a Statement of Attainment carrying the unit codes and names — but we can issue a Statement of Attendance instead. Talk to your trainer on the day if this applies to you.

Renewal timing: as a general guide, CPR should be refreshed every 12 months and Provide First Aid every 3 years — check your specific workplace's requirements, as some employers ask for more frequent renewal.

Upgrading on the day or afterwards:

  • You can upgrade from CPR to Provide First Aid, or from Provide First Aid to Childcare First Aid, on the day of your course — call 1300 628 299 to arrange it and pay the difference (your trainer can take payment on an EFTPOS machine in the room if available).
  • Upgrading from Provide First Aid to Childcare First Aid on a different day is also possible, but must happen within 6 weeks of your original Provide First Aid course — call 1300 628 299 to organise it.
  • Upgrading from CPR to Provide First Aid on a different day is not available under any circumstances — that upgrade can only happen on the same day as your original CPR class.
  • If you've completed Provide First Aid and upgrade to Childcare First Aid within the same month, you only need to complete modules 15 and 16 of the Childcare online learning — not the whole module set again.

Working with Children Check (WWCC): not required — even CBD College's own trainers delivering Childcare First Aid aren't required to hold one. A WWCC may still be required by your employer for your actual childcare job, but it isn't a condition of enrolling in or attending the course.

Fees & payment

  • Provide CPR: from $45
  • Provide First Aid: from $95
  • Childcare First Aid: from $115

You can pay online, over the phone by credit card (call 1300 628 299), or in person at the Sydney office (Level 5, 8 Quay Street, Haymarket, Monday–Friday 8am–5pm) by cash, EFTPOS or credit card. For group or workplace training, call 1300 628 299 to arrange onsite or team bookings.

Switching & cancellation

We're unable to offer refunds for no-shows, or for cancellations after booking where you simply decide not to attend. If you need to change your class date, do this through the Switch function in your Student Portal.

A switching fee always applies — this is not free, even if you switch more than 48 hours before your class. The fee is higher if you switch within 48 hours of your class. Manage your switch as early as possible through the Student Portal, or call us if you need a hand with the process.

Price match

Price match applies to First Aid, CPR and Childcare First Aid courses. If you find the same course (matching the same unit of competency) publicly advertised for less by another Registered Training Organisation, we'll do our best to match it — submit the competitor's price on our price match page and we'll email you a discount code to book at the matched price. Price match is offered at CBD College's discretion.

Certificates & USI

CBD College is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 91399). All three courses lead to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment, made available in your Student Portal.

A USI (Unique Student Identifier) is not required to book your course — but it is required before your certificate can be issued. It's free to create in a few minutes at usi.gov.au. Make sure the name and date of birth on your USI exactly match your CBD College enrolment details, as mismatches are the most common reason a certificate is delayed.

On-the-day requirements

  • Bring photo ID and writing materials.
  • Wear comfortable clothing — you'll be on the ground at times during CPR and first aid practice.
  • Arrive on time — more than 15 minutes late and you won't be admitted, and you'll need to rebook.
  • Complete the online pre-study module before you arrive (link sent after booking).
  • Assessment is entirely practical and scenario-based — there are no written exams.
  • CBD College's 30,000+ Google reviews reflect training delivered across all its centres and course lines, including First Aid & CPR.
