CBD College — RTO 91399

BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety (Cert IV WHS)

What is Cert IV WHS, and who is it for?

The BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is a nationally recognised qualification, delivered by CBD College (RTO 91399) and regulated by ASQA under the Australian Qualifications Framework. It gives you the skills and knowledge to manage WHS in the workplace, including risk assessment and management, WHS legislation and compliance, incident response, consultation and communication, implementing WHS management systems, hazard identification, WHS reporting, and emergency preparedness.

It's suited to a wide range of people, including:

  • Current WHS officers and coordinators
  • Workers wanting to move into a WHS role
  • Supervisors responsible for team safety
  • HR professionals managing WHS compliance
  • Small business owners managing their own WHS obligations
  • Anyone wanting foundational WHS knowledge

The course is designed for all experience levels, including complete beginners — no prior WHS experience is required, though it can help you complete assessments more quickly. There's no specific age limit, provided you have the necessary literacy and technical skills. Graduates typically move into roles such as WHS officer, safety advisor or WHS supervisor, and the course prepares you for WHS leadership responsibilities and career progression into supervisory roles.

Entry requirements & eligibility

There are no formal entry requirements for Cert IV WHS — you don't need any prior WHS qualification or experience to enrol. You'll need:

  • A laptop and good computer skills
  • The ability to use Microsoft Word
  • An assumed appropriate level of literacy, including:
    • Language, communication and interpersonal skills
    • The ability to read and interpret WHS legislation and statistics
    • The ability to develop and document WHS registers and action plans
    • The ability to present information clearly and use technology confidently
    • The ability to prepare records and documents
    • Planning, research, interpretation, analysis and synthesis skills
  • A Unique Student Identifier (USI) — required for all nationally recognised training

If you have special needs or are concerned about whether your literacy, numeracy or technical skills are sufficient, email info@cbdcollege.edu.au before booking so CBD College can talk through the right support with you.

Credit transfer (CT): CT must be applied for before enrolment. Email your request to info@cbdcollege.edu.au with a copy of your academic transcript. CBD College assesses CT applications case by case, and will grant CT where the unit presented is (i) exactly the same (code and name) or (ii) an equivalent unit with currency demonstrated. Note that CBD College uses an integrated training and assessment approach — each assessment covers multiple units rather than one unit at a time. This means CT is often of limited practical benefit: removing the parts of an assessment covered by a CT unit would usually make the rest of the assessment incomplete or senseless, so applying for CT is unlikely to reduce your training and assessment workload in any meaningful way.

Course structure, duration & delivery modes

The face-to-face (or Zoom) component runs for 5 consecutive business days, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm AET. You have 12 months from enrolment to complete the course, including your written assessments, which are completed at your own pace after the 5-day component ends — there's no minimum time, and students with computer skills and WHS experience often finish sooner. Practical assessments are completed during the 5-day component; no workplace placement is required.

You choose one of two ways to attend:

  • Classroom: In person with your trainer and classmates, at our Sydney CBD or Melbourne CBD campus (see Locations & addresses).
  • Zoom: Live via video conferencing, available Australia-wide. It follows the same structure and hours as the classroom course, with a dedicated trainer leading every session — you get the same quality of instruction and interaction as classroom students, just from wherever you are.

Both delivery modes use the same qualification, trainers, and assessments — the only difference is location. The 5-day face-to-face (or Zoom) component is mandatory, since your practical assessments are completed during it. If you can't attend a scheduled day, you'll be rebooked into a later date with another cohort at a time that suits you and the college. Switching between classroom and Zoom is possible subject to availability — contact the college to arrange it.

If you work full-time, you'll need to take leave for the 5-day week, but assessment deadlines afterward are flexible.

Homework: Expect around 1–2 hours of homework each evening during the face-to-face (or Zoom) component.

Your trainers: Our WHS trainers include Colin Martin (20+ years in WHS and emergency response, including 15 years in the Australian Army and a career as a nurse and registered paramedic) and Nicole Mesic (10+ years in WHS across construction, telecommunications and intralogistics, specialising in management systems, incident management and auditing).

Ongoing support: CBD College runs Help Sessions once a fortnight — a virtual classroom you can 'drop in' to for revision, consolidation and assessment support. You're welcome to attend as many of these fortnightly sessions as you need while you're enrolled.

Computer & equipment requirements

You'll need an internet-enabled laptop or desktop computer with Microsoft Office installed (Word is essential; 2007+ for PC or 2010+ for Mac) and a stable internet connection — this is required to complete your written assessments, whether you're studying in the classroom or via Zoom. Moderate computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Word, are expected.

If you're joining via Zoom, you'll also need a webcam, microphone and stable internet connection to take part.

What to bring to in-person classes: Your laptop, photo ID, and a pen and paper. Your laptop must be Wi-Fi enabled and brought with you every day of the course. Wi-Fi is available at our training facilities for students attending in person.

If your computer breaks during the course, contact CBD College — we'll help with rescheduling or alternative arrangements.

Assessments

There are 5 integrated assessments, covering role plays, project reports, templates, and written questioning based on WHS scenarios. Because they're integrated, each assessment draws on multiple units at once, which reduces duplication and keeps your workload manageable — no separate assessment per unit. No workplace placement is required.

You can start working on your assessments during the 5-day face-to-face (or Zoom) component and continue afterward — this gives you momentum heading into the self-paced phase. You have 12 months from the end of the course to complete all assessments; if you can't submit within that time, you'll need to re-enrol at a cost of $399 (extensions may be available in some circumstances — contact the college).

Assessment is competency-based. If a submission is marked "not yet competent," you'll receive feedback and can resubmit — the fortnightly drop-in Help Sessions are available to help you improve the areas that need work.

A real-world scenario, from start to finish

Throughout the course you step into the role of a WHS Coordinator at a fictional company, ABC Steel Engineering — a busy steel fabrication business with around 90 workers and some genuine health-and-safety challenges to sort out. Every assessment task connects back to this one workplace, so instead of answering abstract questions, you solve realistic problems the way a WHS professional actually does on the job. The five assessments are:

  1. WHS Legislation & Statistics — understanding the laws that apply in your state and interpreting safety data.
  2. Document Writing & Safety Management Systems — creating the policies and procedures a workplace relies on.
  3. Consultation & Training — bringing workers into safety decisions and building their skills.
  4. Risk Management, Chemicals & Health — identifying hazards, controlling risks, and protecting worker wellbeing.
  5. Responding to Incidents & Review — investigating incidents and improving systems afterward.

Good to know: answers are short and practical, usually three or four sentences — you won't be writing lengthy essays. You reference the WHS laws for your own state or territory, so what you learn applies directly to where you work. Everything is submitted as one file by email, and some tasks are practical activities done in class, observed by your trainer. If you have any language, literacy or accessibility needs, let CBD College know beforehand so the right support can be arranged.

Certificates

Once you've submitted your assessments, they'll be assessed, and once you're marked competent across all units you'll be notified by email. Your Certificate and Record of Transcript will be available on your Student Portal within 2 business days of being marked competent.

If you lose your certificate, contact CBD College to request a replacement.

International students

No — international students cannot enrol if their visa requires them to study at a CRICOS-registered institution. CBD College is not a CRICOS-registered provider.

Deferral & part-time options

There isn't a fixed "part-time" delivery mode — the 5-day face-to-face (or Zoom) component runs as a single intensive week — but your written assessments can be completed at your own pace over up to 12 months, which gives you effective flexibility once the classroom/Zoom week is done. If personal circumstances mean you need to defer your enrolment altogether, contact CBD College — deferrals may be possible depending on your situation.

Locations & addresses

Classroom courses run at:

  • Sydney CBD — Level 5, 8 Quay Street, Haymarket NSW 2000 (next to Central Station)
  • Melbourne CBD — Level 3, 55 Swanston Street, Melbourne VIC 3000

The Zoom course is available Australia-wide for students not near either campus.

Getting in touch

Call 1300 616 218, email info@cbdcollege.edu.au, or visit cbdcollege.edu.au. You can book online or by phone. After you've enrolled, you'll receive login details for your Student Portal, where course materials, resources and your Zoom class link (each morning) are all available.

Career pathway: continuing to Diploma WHS

After completing Cert IV WHS, you can progress to the BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety or other advanced WHS qualifications. Because your Cert IV WHS core units already cover part of the Diploma content, if you completed Cert IV WHS with CBD College you'll attend fewer face-to-face days and complete fewer assessments for the Diploma — and you're eligible for a discounted Diploma fee. See the Diploma WHS article for details, or ask about the Cert IV WHS + Diploma WHS bundle ($3,299) when you enrol.

CBD College's operations, including Cert IV WHS, are governed by (among other legislation) the Privacy Act 1988, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, and the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.
