RSA vs RCG: what's the difference?

RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) is the certification you need to sell, serve or supply alcohol. RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gambling) is the certification you need to work in or around gaming machines and gambling areas. They're separate certificates — many NSW venues that have both a bar and gaming machines require staff to hold both, which is why they're often done together.
What RSA covers
RSA teaches you how to serve alcohol responsibly and legally — checking ID and refusing service to minors, recognising and managing intoxication and understanding a venue's legal responsibilities. It's required for anyone involved in selling, serving or supplying alcohol.
What RCG covers
RCG focuses on the responsible conduct of gambling — understanding the rules around gaming machines, recognising and responding to problem gambling and a venue's obligations in gaming areas. It's required for staff who work in or around the gaming room.
Do you need one or both?
- Working a bar, bottle shop, restaurant or café that serves alcohol → RSA
- Working in or near a venue's gaming machines → RCG
- Working in a pub or club with both → usually both RSA and RCG
In NSW
In NSW, RSA and RCG training is overseen by Liquor & Gaming NSW. After completing an approved course you receive an interim certificate and then apply for your photo competency card. Because so many venues need both, CBD College offers RSA and RCG together as a package.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do RSA and RCG together?▾
Yes — they're commonly completed together in a single day, which is why we offer an RSA + RCG package. If you work in a pub or club with gaming machines, you'll usually need both.
Are RSA and RCG the same across Australia?▾
RSA exists Australia-wide, but the rules, card validity and the regulator differ by state. Gambling training also goes by different names in some states (for example RSG). This guide reflects NSW; check your state's regulator if you're working elsewhere.
