How to use a defibrillator (AED)

By CBD College · Reviewed by our training team · Updated 6 June 2026 · 3 min read

To use an AED (automated external defibrillator), turn it on and follow the spoken prompts: attach the pads to the person's bare chest as shown, make sure no one is touching them while it analyses and press the shock button if instructed. Keep doing CPR between prompts. AEDs are designed for untrained bystanders and won't shock unless it's needed.

Early defibrillation dramatically improves survival from cardiac arrest. AEDs are found in many workplaces, shopping centres and sporting venues — you don't need to be trained to use one, but practising in a first aid course builds confidence.
