How often do you need to renew your first aid certificate in Australia?

In Australia, you should refresh your HLTAID009 CPR every 12 months and renew your HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate every 3 years. HLTAID012 Childcare First Aid follows the same cycle. These intervals align with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidance and most workplace and regulatory requirements.
CPR — every 12 months
CPR technique and resuscitation guidelines are reviewed regularly by the Australian Resuscitation Council, and CPR is a perishable skill. For that reason HLTAID009 CPR is widely expected to be refreshed every 12 months — many workplaces, sporting bodies and health roles require an annual CPR update.
Provide First Aid — every 3 years
A HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate is generally valid for 3 years. Because it includes a CPR component, you'll typically do a CPR refresh in the years between your full first aid renewals.
Childcare First Aid — every 3 years
HLTAID012 First Aid in an Education and Care Setting remains current for 3 years, but the CPR component must be refreshed every 12 months. Under the Education and Care Services National Regulations, both need to be in date at the same time — a valid HLTAID012 certificate doesn't keep you compliant if your annual CPR update has lapsed. Educators should also confirm any additional requirements set by their service and check ACECQA's list of approved qualifications under the National Quality Framework.
How to renew
- Check the issue date on your statement of attainment to see when it's due.
- Book the relevant course online — renewals are the same accredited course, not a shorter 'refresher-only' unit.
- Have your USI (Unique Student Identifier) ready so your new certificate can be issued.
Frequently asked questions
Does my first aid certificate have an expiry date?▾
Certificates don't legally 'expire', but industry and ARC guidance set recommended currency periods — 12 months for CPR and 3 years for first aid. Most employers require you to stay within these.
Is the renewal a shorter course?▾
No — you complete the same nationally recognised course again. Online pre-learning beforehand keeps the in-person session efficient.
