How long does an RSA last in NSW?

In NSW, your RSA competency card is valid for 5 years. When you finish the course you're issued an interim certificate (valid for a limited period — around 90 days) and you then apply to Liquor & Gaming NSW for your 5-year photo competency card. The same applies to RCG. Other states have different rules, so check the regulator where you'll be working.
Your 5-year competency card
Once you've completed an approved RSA course in NSW and obtained your competency card through Liquor & Gaming NSW, it's valid for 5 years. Your RCG card works the same way.
The interim certificate comes first
Straight after the course you receive an interim certificate so you can start work right away. It's only valid for a short window (around 90 days), within which you need to apply for your full photo competency card — don't leave it too late.
Renewing
Before your 5-year card expires you'll need to renew it to keep working in licensed venues. Check the current renewal process with Liquor & Gaming NSW, as requirements can change.
Working interstate
RSA card validity differs between states and territories. If you move or work across borders, confirm whether your NSW competency is recognised or whether you need that state's certification.
Frequently asked questions

In NSW the competency card is valid for 5 years, then you renew it. The interim certificate you get on the day is only valid for a short period before you must apply for the card.
How soon can I work after the course?▾
You can generally start as soon as you have your interim certificate — but you must apply for your photo competency card within its validity window.
