DRSABCD: the first aid action plan explained

By CBD College · Reviewed by our training team · Updated 6 June 2026 · 5 min read

DRSABCD is the first aid action plan taught in accredited courses: Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation. It's a step-by-step sequence based on Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines for responding to an emergency.

DRSABCD (sometimes written DRS ABCD) is the cornerstone of first aid training in Australia. Each letter is a step you work through in order when responding to someone who is unwell or injured.

The steps

  • D — Danger: make sure the scene is safe.
  • R — Response: check whether the person responds.
  • S — Send for help: call Triple Zero (000).
  • A — Airway: open and clear the airway.
  • B — Breathing: check for normal breathing.
  • C — CPR: 30 compressions to 2 breaths if not breathing normally.
  • D — Defibrillation: attach an AED as soon as possible.

Learn it hands-on

Reading the steps is no substitute for practising them. Accredited first aid and CPR courses let you rehearse DRSABCD on manikins with an experienced trainer so you can act with confidence in a real emergency.
