Does a White Card expire? Validity explained

A White Card doesn't have an expiry date and never needs to be renewed — as long as you keep working in construction. However, if you haven't carried out construction work for two consecutive years or more, your card becomes void under WHS law, and you'll need to complete the General Construction Induction Training again before returning to site.
The two-year rule
Your White Card remains valid as long as you've performed construction work within the last two years. This isn't just a guideline — it's set out in clause 316 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 (NSW), and the same rule applies in every state and territory. There's no refresher or renewal shortcut: if your card has lapsed, you must redo the full course through a registered training organisation.
Can I use my White Card in other states?
Yes. The White Card is nationally recognised, so a card issued in any Australian state or territory is accepted on construction sites right across the country — you don't need to obtain a new card or repeat the training when moving interstate. The only condition is that your card remains valid under the two-year rule.
If you hold an older-style card issued before 2009 (such as a Queensland blue card or another state-issued induction card), these are generally still recognised as proof of general construction induction training, subject to the same two-year rule — but recognition of legacy cards can vary, so check with your state's WHS regulator if you're unsure.
