Do you need a qualification to be a barista?

No — there's no legal requirement to hold a qualification to work as a barista in Australia. However, a barista course gives you the practical skills and confidence employers look for, and a nationally recognised SITHFAB025 unit (Prepare and serve espresso coffee) on your résumé helps you stand out, especially if you have no experience.
The short answer
Legally, anyone can call themselves a barista and apply for café work. There's no licence or mandatory certificate. What gets you hired is being able to actually make great coffee, fast, in a busy café.
Why training still matters
A practical course teaches you the technique a café won't have time to — extraction, milk texturing, latte art and machine care — so you can walk into a trial shift confident. It also shows employers you're serious.
What employers actually want
- You can make consistent, café-quality coffee from day one
- You understand the machine and keep it clean
- You're quick, tidy and good with customers
- Bonus: a nationally recognised unit on your résumé
Frequently asked questions
Will a barista course get me a job?▾
It won't guarantee one, but it makes you far more competitive — especially against applicants with no skills to show. Pair it with a confident trial shift.
Is the 3-hour course enough?▾
For home baristas and getting started, yes. For a résumé credential, the 5-hour course adds a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.
