Cert IV vs Diploma of WHS: which should you do?

Choose the BSB41419 Certificate IV in WHS if you're starting out or moving into a safety role — it's the entry-level WHS qualification and the one most safety-officer and advisor jobs ask for. Choose the BSB51319 Diploma of WHS to step up into senior or management safety roles; it builds on the Cert IV and suits experienced practitioners. Many people complete the Cert IV first, then the Diploma.

BSB41419 Certificate IV in WHS

The entry-level work health and safety qualification. It covers contributing to WHS risk management, incident response, consultation and compliance — the foundation for a safety officer or advisor role.

BSB51319 Diploma of WHS

A higher qualification for those moving into senior, coordinator or management safety roles. It goes deeper into managing WHS systems, risk and compliance across an organisation, and typically suits people with some experience.

How they stack up

  • Starting out in safety → Certificate IV in WHS
  • Stepping up to senior/management → Diploma of WHS
  • Want both → many students do the Cert IV first, then the Diploma (often as a package)
