An aviation pilot adds hospitality skills as an international student

Alfred J.

The skills you learn — teamwork, customer service, working under pressure — are useful in many industries, not just hospitality.

Background

I have a background in aviation and previously worked as a First Officer operating the DHC-6 Twin Otter in Vanuatu. While studying a Bachelor of Aviation Management at Griffith University, I wanted to develop practical skills outside the aviation industry, so I completed a barista course at CBD College because I enjoy customer service and wanted hospitality experience as well.

Why CBD College

I chose CBD College for its practical, industry-focused training. I wanted hands-on experience in a real café-style environment rather than only theory, so I could quickly build confidence and workplace-ready skills. The convenient location and flexible schedule suited my university studies, and I'd heard positive feedback about the trainers and supportive learning environment.

The experience

My overall experience was very positive and practical. What stood out most was the hands-on learning approach and the encouragement from the trainers. The course focused not only on making coffee but also on customer service, communication, teamwork and working efficiently during busy periods, which helped me become more confident in a fast-paced environment.

The impact

Completing the course improved my confidence in communication, teamwork and working under pressure as an international student. I'm proud of completing the training while balancing university studies and adapting to a new environment in Australia. I'm continuing my Bachelor of Aviation Management while looking for part-time hospitality work and building my long-term aviation career.

Their advice

I'd recommend CBD College to anyone wanting practical, hands-on training in a supportive environment. Stay engaged during the practical sessions, ask questions and use the training as a stepping stone to real workplace experience.
